A Room-by-Room House Cleaning Checklist

What to clean in every room, how often, and in what order, so the house stays finished from one week to the next.

A clean house isn’t one big job. It’s a handful of small ones, done in the right order and often enough that nothing gets away from you. Here’s the checklist we’d give a friend: room by room, with what to do every week and what can wait.

Before you start: work top to bottom, dry to wet

Two rules save more time than any product. Clean from the top of a room down, so dust falls onto floors you haven’t done yet. And do the dry work (dusting, vacuuming) before the wet work (wiping, mopping), so you’re never pushing damp dust around.

Every room

  • Dust from high to low: ceiling fans and vents, shelves, picture frames, then furniture tops.
  • Wipe light switches, door handles and remotes: the spots every hand in the house touches.
  • Clean mirrors and glass with a streak-free finish.
  • Empty the trash and put in a fresh liner.
  • Vacuum, then mop hard floors, finishing at the door.

Kitchen

  • Clear and wipe the counters, including behind the small appliances.
  • Wipe the outside of the fridge, oven, dishwasher and microwave, and the inside of the microwave.
  • Clean the stovetop and the backsplash behind it.
  • Scrub the sink and polish the faucet.
  • Wipe the cabinet fronts and handles where fingers land.
  • Sweep and mop, getting into the corners and along the toe kicks.

Bathrooms

  • Clean and disinfect the toilet: the bowl, the seat, the base and the handle.
  • Scrub the shower or tub, the walls and the door or curtain.
  • Clean the sink and counter, and polish the faucet and fixtures.
  • Shine the mirror.
  • Restock toilet paper and hang fresh towels.
  • Mop the floor, behind the toilet too.

When you disinfect, follow the label: most disinfectants need the surface to stay wet for a few minutes to work. More on how we handle that on our product standard.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Make the beds, or change the sheets if it’s that day.
  • Dust nightstands, dressers, the TV stand and the tops of picture frames.
  • Straighten cushions and fold throws.
  • Vacuum the floors, under the edges of the furniture and the rugs.

How often: a simple rhythm

  • Every week: everything above, kitchens and bathrooms first.
  • Every few weeks: baseboards, door frames, blinds, inside the microwave, and the vents.
  • Every season: a deep clean, for the build-up a regular clean doesn’t reach. Our deep cleaning checklist covers it.

When you’d rather have the time back

This checklist works. It also takes a few hours every week. If you’d rather spend them on something else, our recurring house cleaning starts at $135 a visit, weekly, every two weeks or monthly, with the same trusted cleaner every time and a flat price agreed before we start.

We clean homes in Chambersburg, Fayetteville, Greencastle and Shippensburg. See your price in a minute, or call or text (717) 496-9538.
